What Is Conviction?
The English word conviction is commonly used in three ways:
As in the phrase “a strong conviction,” meaning a personal belief, or perhaps better, an assured personal belief.
As in the phrase “under conviction,” meaning an uncomfortable sense of guilt before God or others. Used this way, the word usually implies that one has not yet repented of his sin and changed his wrong attitudes or behavior (though, of course, he may presently do so).
As in the sentence, “He was convicted of a crime.” Here the word has an objective, legal force.
